Core English word list

WordFinderHub's core English list is generated from the Alt12Dicts data maintained within the English word-list project associated with SCOWL. Alt12Dicts is based on Alan Beale's 12Dicts work and is explicitly placed in the public domain.

For the main Unscrambler and the All Words view in Word Finder, WordFinderHub uses the 3esl list for words of four letters or more. The 12Dicts documentation describes this as one of its smaller common-English lists.

Two-letter and three-letter results are handled separately. They come only from WordFinderHub-maintained curated lists of recognizable English words. This prevents abbreviations, shorthand and obscure dictionary entries from dominating short-word results.

Why we filter the source

Large spelling databases can contain abbreviations, specialist vocabulary, unusual forms and proper names that are useful for spell-checking but distracting in a general word finder. WordFinderHub deliberately favors recognizable modern English vocabulary over showing every possible dictionary entry.

Category lists

Names, Places, Animals, Food, Plants and Objects use separate WordFinderHub-maintained lists. These categories can include proper names and multi-word entries where appropriate. They are intended as useful search categories, not exhaustive reference databases.

Independence from word games

WordFinderHub does not use or claim to reproduce an official commercial word-game dictionary. It is an independent utility and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any third-party word game, game publisher or dictionary publisher.

License record

The repository contains a third-party license record identifying the source dataset and licensing information used for the production word list. WordFinderHub keeps this record with the site source so the provenance of the word data remains documented.
